Twins Call Up Righty Ryan Eades and Send Willians Astudillo to Triple-A
By Seth Carlson
In a roster move Saturday, the Minnesota Twins called up right-handed reliever Ryan Eades, who went 2-2 with a 5.68 ERA for Rochester, the Twins' Triple-A team.
In a corresponding move, fan-favorite backstop Willians Astudillo, known as "La Tortuga" across baseball, was optioned to the minors. Astudillo, who started off the season hot at the plate, has cooled off significantly since, hitting .250 overall with 2 home runs and 11 RBI in 33 games played.
Astudillo is likely the victim of a Twins' bullpen that has been taxed recently and was in need of a fresh arm, despite the team's commanding 10.5-game lead over the second-place Cleveland in the AL Central.
Additionally, catcher Mitch Garver has been terrific at the plate for Minnesota, hitting .320 with 10 home runs in roughly the same number of games played as Astudillo. Garver's return from the IL was bound to impact Astudillo, however, we hope this isn't the last we've seen of the youthful Venezuelan catcher.
Eades, 27, has never pitched at the major league level, having been in the Twins' farm system since being selected in the second round of the 2013 MLB Draft. While his numbers don't look particularly pleasing, perhaps he could step in and eat some late innings out of the bullpen in Minnesota.
