Twins Defeat Jose Berrios in Arbitration Case
By Scott Rogust
We can add yet another Major League Baseball player's name in the loss column in terms of arbitration.
According to MLB insider Mark Feinsand, the Minnesota Twins defeated right-handed pitcher Jose Berrios in their arbitration case. Berrios, who had been seeking $4.4 million this year, will instead earn $4.025 million.
The fact that these negotiations went to arbitration over a measly $200,000 is head-scratching to say the least. But, it's still a significant raise for Berrios, who just last season earned $620,000.
Minnesota has the option to sign Berrios to a contract extension, but if they can't come to an agreement, the young pitcher becomes a free agent in 2023.
Berrios proved his worth throughout his career, but never more than this past season. In 32 games, the 25-year-old compiled a 14-8 record, along with a 3.68 ERA and 195 strikeouts over 200.1 innings pitched.
It can officially be ruled a loss for Berrios, but the young ace is still a big winner. Now, he has the chance to up his asking price by performing well on a Twins team looking like legitimate World Series contenders.
