Twins and Royals Could Ignite MLB With This Surprise Trade Involving Ian Kennedy
By Jerry Trotta
While having no baseball stinks -- especially while quarantining -- there are undoubtedly some positives to be had for MLB clubs. For instance, some teams bit sternly by the injury bug thus far have the luxury of getting as healthy as possible.
Additionally, this indefinite hiatus serves as an extended offseason of sorts that clubs should be looking to exploit.
The Minnesota Twins were one of the most aggressive teams over the winter and they should look to continue to press the issue in regards to rounding out their roster. Luckily for Minnesota, the team shouldn't have to look outside the AL Central to find a potential trade partner.
Veteran right-hander Ian Kennedy resurrected his career as a reliever for the Kansas City Royals last season. The 35-year-old logged a 3.41 ERA, 30 saves, and 73 strikeouts in 63.1 innings of work. His value won't get any higher, and Kansas City was already looking to unload him at the 2019 trade deadline.
Despite Kennedy's age, the Royals should ask for two prospects in return for the USC product. Twins middle infielder Nick Gordon will need to be included in this deal. Last season with Triple-A Rochester, the 24-year-old talent hit .298/.342/.459 with 49 runs scored and 29 doubles.
Kansas City should also ask for a talented young pitcher, and right-hander Dakota Chalmers, 23, fits the bill. Minnesota's No. 23 prospect, per MLB.com, has recorded 3.98 ERA in five minor league seasons.
This is a win-win proposal for both clubs in that the Twins would add a needed arm in their bullpen, and the Royals would land two talented youngsters to help spark their rebuild.
