Twins Reveal Jose Berrios Will Start ALDS Game 1 Against Yankees
By Chris Russo
The Minnesota Twins will have arguably the best pitcher on the mound at Yankee Stadium in Game 1 of the ALDS tomorrow night.
Fourth-year right-hander Jose Berrios will start for the AL Central champs in Friday's series opener in the Bronx.
Berrios finished second on the team in 2019 with 14 wins and second among Minnesota's starters with a 3.68 ERA. He also led the team with 32 starts and 200.1 innings pitched. Berrios has represented the American League in the All-Star Game in each of the last two seasons.
The Yankees will counter with left-hander James Paxton, who finished 15-6 with a 3.82 ERA in his first year in pinstripes.
Berrios has made one postseason appearance, which came against the Yankees in the 2017 AL Wild Card Game. Berrios became the losing pitcher after allowing three earned runs on five hits over three innings in a relief appearance. He struck out four but surrendered a home run to Aaron Judge.
The Twins and Yankees finished 2019 with the two highest team single-season home run totals in MLB history, so Berrios and Paxton will have their work cut out for them to keep the slugfest from continuing.
