Twitter Roasted Dabo Swinney Over Ill-Advised Shirt Before Trevor Lawrence Came to the Rescue
By Michael Luciano
Dabo Swinney's tone-deafness to social unrest is honestly quite impressive at times, as he has both downplayed the concerns of the coronavirus when the pandemic was its early stages and responded to George Floyd's death after his QB did.
His latest casual stunt was interpreted by many as a controversial political statement, too, forcing his own star players to come to his defense.
A photo of Swinney wearing a shirt that read "football matters" leaked this weekend. Considering the increased fervor behind the "Black Lives Matter" movement and the increasingly antagonistic response of "All Lives Matter," many thought Swinney was making a political statement.
Leave it to quarterback Trevor Lawrence to clean up after his coach and confirm that his shirt wasn't political.
Lawrence claimed that Swinney is not mocking the Black Lives Matter movement, adding that he had been wearing the shirt in team meetings for months.
Even if Dabo's shirt isn't political, the wording of it could easily be construed as such, and the timing of this entire escapade was unfortunate. It's not a great look for a 50-year-old man when the 20-year-old quarterback has to make excuses for his behavior on Twitter.
