Former Tar Heel Ty Lawson Takes Major NSFW Shots at Roy Williams and UNC Basketball on Instagram
By Emily Adams
Ty Lawson was a star point guard for the University of North Carolina basketball team, but he put the program on blast via his Instagram story this weeekend. He went off and insisted that he doesn't "support anything [they] do," and that head coach Roy Williams "knows why."
Shots fired, to say the very least!
Lawson's history in the NBA has often been tumultuous. He was traded to the Denver Nuggets immediately after being drafted, and became a starter for the team in 2011. He had four very successful seasons, averaging more than 15 points a game, but from there, his career went downhill.
He was benched at the beginning of the 2015–16 season after being traded to the Houston Rockets, and was suspended twice during that season for driving while impaired. He played only two more full seasons in the league after that.
Notably, off-court problems were also an issue for Lawson at UNC; during his junior season, he plead guilty to underage drinking and driving while impaired.
Lawson's apparent distaste for the Carolina program and for Williams seems to have developed fairly recently. The day before he called out the team and his former coach, Lawson was voted as the fan-favorite point guard in UNC history. He has also posted positive messages about UNC on his social media pages as recently as 2017.
Whatever is going on between Lawson, UNC and the NBA, we hope it gets resolved soon, because we would love to see him back out on the court where he belongs.
