VIDEO: UConn Coaching Legend Jim Calhoun Cuts Down Nets After Leading DIII Program to Tourney in Second Season
By Jerry Trotta
Did you really think that previously retired UConn coaching legend Jim Calhoun wouldn't make headlines in March? After putting the Huskies basketball program on the map with three national titles -- which led to his induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005 -- the 77-year-old is back and leading another school to unprecedented glory. Check out Calhoun cutting down the nets after coaching the University of Saint Joseph to the Division III NCAA Tournament in the team's second year of existence.
Calhoun's feat becomes all the more remarkable when you consider that Saint Joseph is 88 years old, and was an all-girls school until 2016. At that point, however, the university was struggling with enrollment numbers, and was forced to welcome men.
Forget basketball players -- prior to just a few years back, Saint Joseph had ZERO men enrolled in the school. The fact that Calhoun was able to lead the school to an NCAA Tourney berth is nothing short of extraordinary, and further cements his status as a legend to the sport of basketball.
