UGA DB's Mom Powerfully Backs Kirby Smart's Leadership After His Latest Statement on Protests
By Tyler Kemp
Following the recent murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, compounded with the killings of Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery in the previous weeks, many people within the sports world are finding different ways in order to take a stand against racism and the wrongful deaths of black people in America.
One of those important figures who gave his thoughts on the matter was Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart. In his typed note, Smart denounced racism and also mentioned that he sympathizes with his black players and coaches on the UGA staff. In a response to Smart, the mother of UGA defensive back Ameer Speed shared her thoughts about an experience with the coach when Smart was recruiting Speed, backing up his words entirely.
A genuine man.
Speed is entering his senior year at Georgia, which means his mother is reminiscing on a story from almost four years ago. The fact that Smart was able to build a bond with a mother and her son through something bigger than football meant a lot. The connection that Smart makes with his players runs deeper than what they can do on the field.
In a time of despair for many black mothers of student-athletes, Speed’s mother knows that her young son is in good hands in Athens. With the help of Smart putting the right people in place around himself and his players, all parties involved can have a better understanding about how to make progress.
