UTEP Basketball Coach Rodney Terry Hospitalized in Critical Condition Following Severe Allergic Reaction
By Jerry Trotta
Some disturbing news emerged on Thursday evening that will resonate with the entire college basketball community. UTEP head coach Rodney Terry has been hospitalized and is currently in critical condition following a significant allergic reaction suffered from a meal he consumed on Thursday.
This startling update contradicts earlier reports which conveyed that Terry was recovering and expecting to be released from the hospital after initial treatment.
The earlier optimistic report came from assistant coach Kenton Paulino, who took over on an interim basis as UTEP fell to Florida International in their Conference USA opener on Thursday afternoon.
"Coach Terry wanted to be here, and he’s doing much, much better," said Paulino after the game. "The hospital wanted to hold him for a certain period of time and they wouldn’t let him go. But he’s ready to get back to work."
Paulino obviously wouldn't try to deceive the Miners community. At this point, it's not clear where the initial confusion about Terry's condition arose.
Most importantly, of course, is the head coach's health. We wish all the best to him, his family, and the UTEP community as they deal with this scary development.
