Veteran Infielder Jordy Mercer Re-Signs With Tigers on Minor-League Deal
By Adam Weinrib
Last offseason, the rebuilding Tigers rolled the dice with two former Pirates in the middle infield, nabbing both Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer to fulfill that duty.
Harrison's lone campaign in the Motor City was far from a success, and he's moved on to Philadelphia following an injury-marred season in which he hit .175.
Mercer, on the other hand, hit .270 with nine homers in part-time duty, and the Tigers liked what they saw enough to hand the keys to him once again, reuniting on a minor-league deal this time around.
Mercer, always a steady hand, spent seven years with the Pirates' big league squad, starting for playoff teams in 2013 and 2014, socking a career-high 14 homers in 2017.
He's still beloved by the three rivers, receiving a warm reception when Detroit showed up for an inter-league battle in 2019.
Prospects are not much brighter for the Tigers this season than they were entering last year's 54-win campaign, but Mercer, true to form, has found another city he feels comfortable in. Now, it's time for him to go out and win a roster spot, unless he gets enamored with Toledo.
