VIDEO: Alex Morgan Puts USA Ahead of England With Header Goal and Comical Tea Celebration
By Michael Luciano
The United States Women's National Team didn't have to wait long to regain the lead against England. Christen Press' opening salvo was quickly cancelled out by England's Ellen White, who made it 1-1 in the 19th minute. Just as the USA looked ready to capitulate, however, birthday girl Alex Morgan supplied the heroics with a 31st minute aerial strike to put the USA up 2-1. And her tea-sipping celebration afterwards was nothing short of awesome.
While Phil Neville and England have prided themselves on a rock solid defense led by Lyon right back Lucy Bronze and a couple of stout options at goalkeeper, Morgan and Press punctured that unit twice in the first half.
There have been some great World Cup goal celebrations over the years in men's and women's soccer -- Miroslav Klose's backflip in 2014 comes to mind -- but Morgan's is right up there with any of them. With style points and creativity, the 30-year-old striker knowns how to punctuate a goal.
There is still another half of soccer to be played, but the US is looking as well-oiled as ever in the first half.
