Alex Smith suffered a truly nasty leg injury in 2018 as quarterback of the Washington Redskins. He ended up missing the 2019 season after it was revealed that he was experiencing deep complications after his initial surgery. He explained it all in more detail on ESPN's "Outside the Lines," and the details were scary.

Smith had what he described as life-threatening infections after what was already a terrible compound fracture injury in his leg. He nearly had to undergo an amputation.

To hear him tell it, he's even lucky to continue to be able to draw breath on this earth.

Smith is still under contract with the Redskins for three more seasons (though there's a potential out after 2020), and may decide he wants to try to make a comeback. But after this ESPN, appearance, you'd understand completely if he ultimately opts to retire and move on to the next adventure.
