VIDEO: Anthony Davis Discusses His Role in Lakers' Offseason Recruitment With Rachel Nichols
Anthony Davis was the first to agree to take his talents to Los Angeles and join the Lakers organization following the close of the 2018-19 regular season, but of course, he wasn't the only piece the team was after. In an interview with ESPN's Rachel Nichols Monday, AD discussed the difficulty in understanding how best to recruit Kawhi Leonard, and that sometimes, recruiting calls with Lakers GM Rob Pelinka were a little much.
The Lakers wanted Kawhi, so they went after him hard-- or at least as hard as they could. Davis made it clear that recruiting Kawhi was often difficult because he's not really a recruitable guy. It's next to impossible to know what's going on in the reigning NBA Finals MVP's head.
Nichols also asked about the communication between Davis, Pelinka, and LeBron James during the initial week of free agency when #KawhiWatch was at full throttle.
According to Davis, Pelinka was hitting up his phone just about every 45 minutes for thoughts and updates about Kawhi and other free agents. They sometimes went to the point where Davis had to let the GM know that he was in the middle of something and would have to talk later.
Of course, the Lakers did not acquire Kawhi Leonard, who instead ended up with the Clippers. So much for that.
The Lake Show was able to acquire some other respected names like DeMarcus Cousins and Danny Green in the quest to reload for next season. And with King James and AD constituting a truly formidable nucleus, the Lakers are authentically back in contention in the Western Conference.
