VIDEO: Cardinals Fans Give Stephen Piscotty Huge Standing Ovation in Return to Busch Stadium
By Brian Cass
When the St. Louis Cardinals traded right fielder Stephen Piscotty to the Oakland A's so he could be closer to his mother who had been diagnosed with ALS, we were all reminded that the human element in sports is still very real. On Tuesday, Piscotty walked into the batter's box in at Busch Stadium for the first time since being traded to Oakland, and he was met with a standing ovation from the St. Louis faithful.
As sports fans, it's easy for us to forget that the athletes we watch everyday are humans too, and they face struggles just like we do. For Piscotty, we can only imagine the amount of gratitude he has for the Cardinals organization for giving him the opportunity to be closer to his sick mother. Cardinals fans haven't forgotten why he left town, and they are still showing him love even while he wears a different uniform.
This is the kind of heartwarming stuff that makes sports great.
