VIDEO: Paul Goldschmidt Game-Winning Double Caps Cardinals Sweep and Remarkable Cubs Choke
By Jerry Trotta
The Chicago Cubs were DESPERATE to walk away with a win on Sunday in the series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals after dropping the first two contests against their NL Central rivals. Not stunningly, though Chicago held a 2-1 lead entering the ninth, Yu Darvish was unable to maintain it. With the game deadlocked, Paul Goldschmidt stepped up to the dish with the chance to perhaps put the final nail in the coffin of the Cubbies' playoff dreams. And the Cards slugger did just that by delivering a game-winning RBI double off Yu Darvish to cap a remarkable sweep and hideous Chicago choke-job at home.
Joe Maddon's squad is now four games back in the Wild Card with just six games remaining on their 2019 schedule. Their only hope lies with a potential Nationals collapse, because the Brewers just refuse to lose of late.
It truly must feel sweet for St. Louis to deliver the killer blow to their bitter foes. Those seven games between the rivals at the end of the year don't feel quite so worrisome their end, now do they?
