VIDEO: Celebrating Anniversary of Braves Minor League Manager Phillip Wellman's Hilarious Tirade
By Parker White
Today marks the 12-year anniversary of the greatest, most iconic manager tirade in organized baseball history. Back in 2007, Phillip Wellman was the manager for Double-A Mississippi, a minor league affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, and let's just say he was not happy about getting ejected. Take a look:
Wellman ran the gamut on this one. He got in the face of the home plate umpire and then covered up the entire plate with dirt and marked out his own.
Then he stole third base and chucked it before bringing out his inner Army soldier, crawling to the rosin bag and chucking it towards the umpire. That is more than enough to get your point across, but he wasn't done.
Wellman then picked up second base and third base and walked off the field, blowing a kiss to the fans before leaving.
Sufficed to say, Wellman was suspended three games for his actions. He's lucky it wasn't more.
You would think that teams wouldn't want a character like Wellman around, especially since he doesn't have a managerial record above .500, but he's still in the dugout and is currently the skipper of the Double-A Amarillo Sod Poodles, a minor league affiliate of the San Diego Padres.
We can only hope he has a second act up his sleeve in the near future.
