VIDEO: Clip Emerges of Team USA Losing Scrimmage to Squad Full of Scrubs
By Jerry Trotta
It might still not be time to panic for Team USA ahead of the impending FIBA World Cup, but the squad is inspiring next to no confidence right now. The summer was spent seeing superstars withdraw their names from consideration, and the current compilation of players followed suit by getting ran out of the gym by a select team consisting of unsung G League and overseas talents during their first pre-tournament scrimmage in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Well, footage has finally emerged of this beatdown at the hands of guys like Scotty Hopson, Chris Chiozza, John Jenkins, and Travis Wear, and boy, is it something to behold.
What's most concerning here, however, is that we'd never expect this kind of lifeless performance from a team coached by Gregg Popovich. The future Hall of Famer is renowned for his Spurs competing in virtually every one of their contests regardless of who they're trotting out or who the opposition happens to be.
How does a Pop-led squad, and a good one at that, lose by double digits to Justin Anderson, Chasson Randle, and Chinanu Onuaku?
Team USA needs to address their lack of fluidity on offense and their non-existent transition defense as soon as possible. We lost count as to how many easy buckets the select team scored on America's failure to defend competently on the break.
We sincerely hope that the two-and-a-half weeks Popovich has before USA's opener against the Czech Republic on Sept.1 is enough time to implement much-needed adjustments.
