Hamels is sixth amongst active pitchers in strikeouts, and is the only lefty in the top six other than CC Sabathia. Hamels ranks ninth all-time among left hand pitchers for strikeouts, an incredible achievement for the 35-year-old.
He surpassed left-hander Mark Langston to lock up the 40th spot all-time for himself. Langston threw 2,464 strikeouts across a 16-year career, recording 457 appearances (428 starts). Hamels achieved the feat in just 295 career appearances, all but one of which was as a starter.
With his 1st strikeout tonight, Cubs starter Cole Hamels will move into sole possession of 40th place on all-time strikeout list (currently tied with Mark Langston with 2,464 K’s). Next K will give Hamels sole possession of 9th place in MLB history among left-handed pitchers.

The four-time All-Star is once again in the midst of a stellar year, which has seen him post a 3.08 ERA and a 3-0 record so far. His next target is Jack Morris who is 39th in MLB history with 2,478 strikeouts.
