VIDEO: Craig Kimbrel Reveals and Explains New Cubs Jersey Number at Introductory Press Conference
By Brian Cass
The Chicago Cubs made a splash this week when they brought in closer Craig Kimbrel to help bolster their pitching staff, ending his months-long slate on the open market. And it looks like he'll be wearing a new number with his new team.
Kimbrel will be wearing No. 24 with the Cubs, after wearing 46 with both the Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox. Apparently, Kimbrel believes the new number is a better look for him and that it's more "athletic" than No. 46 anyway.
Kimbrel's not wrong here. Those digits sure look like a more athletic number than No. 46. We're not sure why, but we've been conditioned to see numbers under 30 as athletic numbers. It's weird, but imagine if LeBron James wore a number like 46. It would just look strange, right? Plus, the Ken Griffey Jr. and Kobe Bryant factor doesn't hurt things
Many we're surprised that Kimbrel lasted this long before signing with a team, but the Cubs were able to sign him a three-year deal, so it's not just a one-year rental for Kimbrel's services.
If Kimbrel comes in and plays up to his standard, the Cubs will be a serious threat once the postseason rolls around in October.
