VIDEO: Daniel Descalso Pitched for the Cubs in the 7th Inning and Got Rocked by Jung Ho-Kang
By Jerry Trotta
The Pittsburgh Pirates gave the business to the Chicago Cubs, defeating their NL Central foes by a score of 18-5. As a result, Cubbies manager Joe Maddon elected to throw utility infielder Daniel Descalso on the mound in the bottom of the 7th. And it went just as well as about as well anybody could have predicted as Jung Ho-Kang took Descalso deep to left field to extend the Pirates' lead.
Chicago clearly wanted to get the beatdown over with but the Pirates bats just kept unloading. Throwing a position player on the mound, as if it would lead to better results than another bullpen arm, was likely the sign of a white flag being waved.
At least Descalso now officially has an ERA to his name after 10 big league seasons...though it might not be a stellar figure.
