VIDEO: Dom Smith Makes Terrific Catch While Crashing into the Seats at Citi Field
By Jerry Trotta
Highlights from the first half of the New York Mets' dysfunctional season have been few and far between. The superb All-Star campaigns of Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil have oft been overshadowed by the incompetence of the front office and walking dumpster fire that is the club's bullpen. However, a surprise flare has been the consistency of second-year man Dom Smith, whose been dismissed to an unfamiliar role in the outfield on many occasions thanks to Alonso's emergence. Well, he rewarded Mickey Callaway's confidence on Sunday with a superb catch while steamrolling into the left field seats at Citi Field.
Smith lost his hat while jetting towards the sideline, but was able to extend his arms into the crowd and snag the foul ball for the out.
By no means is the 24-year-old renowned for his elusiveness -- to say nothing of the fact that he is a tried and true first baseman -- but this is the kind of web gem you see from baseball's best.
Well done, Dom.
