VIDEO: Eric Hosmer Almost Cost Padres the Win With Embarrassing Mistake at 1st Base
By Scott Rogust
The San Diego Padres have put up impressive performances against the Milwaukee Brewers in their three-game series. San Diego took the first two games, and were set on completing the sweep of the NL Central powerhouses. With two men on base in the bottom of the ninth, a weakly hit ground ball was fielded by Manny Piña who fired to third base, where Manny Machado and his cannon of an arm attempted to turn two. They would have pulled off the game-winning double play, had Eric Hosmer not begun celebrating just a bit early.
Hosmer, thinking he had the ball in his glove, began celebrating the Padres' victory, only to glance to his right and realize that the baseball was sitting on the dirt.
Yikes, that could have ended poorly for the Padres. In fact, this wasn't the only mistake that Hosmer made in the game, as he got tagged out for slowly trotting around the base path on a non-Machado home run.
The Padres were able to hold on for the 8-7 win over the Brewers, and Hosmer avoided a potential media firestorm as a result.
