VIDEO: Footage of Luis Severino's Bullpen Sessions Comes With Very Positive Update
By Jerry Trotta
We guarantee that this news will make the entirety injury-fatigued Yankees fan base subject to faint. And yes, we mean that in a positive manner. Staff ace Luis Severino threw off a mound Friday afternoon for the first time since March and the young hurler left the session without feeling any discomfort.
Sevy only threw 23 pitches, but in that sample size he threw a few changeups and sliders. More importantly, however, the two-time All-Star was feeling great when talking to reports after the session.
“Perfect,” said Severino. "Better than expected. I feel really strong...For me, it’s been a really long, long year. Doing these steps, now I feel I’m ready to help my team.”
The 25-year-old right-hander even went as far as to say that, given where he's at in his rehab progression, he feels that he can come back as a starter for the Pinstripes. When that will be exactly remains to be seen. But, this should still be taken as reassuring news for the Bombers, whose rotation has been more erratic than lights out in 2019.
Severino reportedly intends to throw off a mound again on Monday and he will add roughly a dozen or so pitches from today's tally.
There's no hiding that there are still plenty of obstacles to overcome -- like throwing to batters during BP coupled with a healthy dose of minor-league rehabilitation starts -- but progress is finally being made in Luis' prolonged recovery.
