VIDEO: Former Mets GM Jim Duquette Gives Absurd Potential Trade Proposal for Pirates' Starling Marte
By Mark Powell
Jim Duquette may know the Mets front office better than most so-called experts out there, but this seems farfetched to say the least. New York has interest in Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Starling Marte, who is very much available as the Bucs debate embracing a rebuild, this proposal Duquette threw out is being roundly bashed by Mets supporters, and rightly so.
Marte has two years left on his deal, including a club option for 2021. He hasn't made the NL All-Star team since 2016, but is a respectable asset at 31 years of age. Nonetheless, we don't think the Pirates would even dream of asking for three (count em!) top-10 prospects in return. There's just no way that would happen.
Andrew Gimenez is New York's third-ranked prospect, while Mark Vientos is No. 6 and Franklyn Kilome is 10th. The Pirates don't exactly have a history of netting returns like this (see Cole, Gerrit), so don't expect new GM Ben Cherington to play hardball. They need to revamp their farm system in the Steel City, and fast.
Would you like to throw in Jacob deGrom, as well? That guy's washed, anyway!
In all seriousness, Brodie Van Wagenen and the Metropolitans will need to channel something other than that Big Duquette Energy if they're going to get the right deal done here.
