For 60 young basketball players, the night of the NBA Draft is one of the best of their lives. Years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice all pay off the second Adam Silver or Mark Tatum says their name at the podium. For those athletes, it's a dream come true. But what about the ones who don't hear their names called? Well, three years ago, that was Fred VanVleet -- former Wichita State guard and current NBA champion.
Draft night has the power to be the best night in a young athlete's life. In the same breath, though, it can strip a player down to his bones and test his strength and perseverance -- a test VanVleet was never afraid to take.
And this year is no different. 60 young athletes got "the call," relieving huge amounts of nerve and stress from their shoulders.
But for the others -- Naz Reid, Shamorie Ponds, and Jared Harper, to name a few -- their biggest basketball test starts now.
It takes a special kind of athlete to react the way VanVleet did -- not just accepting the challenge of going undrafted, but welcoming it with excitement.
And there will undoubtedly be a few undrafted players from this year's class who make it to the league. The biggest question is, who will it be?
