VIDEO: Giancarlo Stanton Tests Legs and Jogs Before Game 4 With Injury Status Uncertain
By Parker White
New York Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton missed Game 2 and Game 3 of the ALCS because of a quad injury, and it seemed he might be out for the remainder of this series. However, the big fella was caught jogging around the bases before Game 4, testing his legs (though he will not be in the starting lineup).
Manager Aaron Boone didn't rule out Stanton's participation when asked about it on Wednesday, and the team will opt to keep him on the roster moving forward, regardless of his Game 4 status.
Stanton remains on the roster, partly because if he's replaced, he can't be on the World Series roster (and he can't be replaced by an extra pitcher in this round, either). The Yankees obviously feel like he can come back and contribute, not only in this series, but the next, if they make it through. There's no one they can promote who would start over Aaron Hicks or Brett Gardner right now. Therefore, you might as well keep Stanton waiting.
Stanton wasn't running in a full out sprint, so maybe they are just testing it out and seeing how much pain he's in. They'll need to see more before sticking him in the outfield, but what if they start him at designated hitter in Game 5? It's not like Edwin Encarnacion is tearing the cover off the ball right now...
