VIDEO: Giancarlo Stanton Removed From Game After Finger Gets Stepped on While Sliding into 3rd Base
By Scott Rogust
After Giancarlo Stanton's return last week, this is the last news that New York Yankees fans wanted to hear on their Tuesday night. During the Bronx Bombers' game against the Toronto Blue Jays, Stanton tried to run to third base on a groundout by first baseman Luke Voit. However, the slugger was tagged out by pitcher Clayton Richard, who unintentionally stepped on Stanton's finger.
As you can make out in the video, it looks like Stanton bore the brunt of Richard's weight when the pitcher tagged him out at third base. Here's an alternative view of the incident, though if you're the squeamish type, you may want to look away:
Shortly afterwards, Stanton was removed from the game and replaced by Brett Gardner in left field.
The severity of Stanton's injury is currently unknown, but it's wholly possible that Aaron Boone is just playing it safe with his star slugger. After all, the Yankees jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, so there wasn't much reason to risk further injury to Stanton's hand, should that have been the cause of his exit.
