VIDEO: Giants Owner John Mara Flat-Out Admits Matt Rhule Contract Was Huge Deterrent
By Brendan Balsamo

After Matt Rhule looked like the frontrunner for the New York Giants' head coaching job, it looked like another Dave Gettleman screw-up once he signed on with the Carolina Panthers to be their next head coach. However, there was good reason for Gettleman and the Giants to go in a different direction and hire Joe Judge instead.

In an interview on SNY, John Mara explains how Rhule's agent called and explained that they former Baylor HC already had a seven-year deal in place. According to Mara, the Giants were not willing to match that sort of deal for a head coach.
Nobody in their right mind should go ahead with a seven year deal worth over $70 million for a first time head coach.

Judge impressed today and has the experience under Saban and Belichick, I'm more than happy with him.
Frustration began to set in for Giants fans when they saw one of their top choices was taken by the Panthers and they had to settle with the New England Patriots' special teams coordinator.
There has been this perception that Matt Rhule was Giants’ top candidate. More accurate is that he was amongst the top candidates. From multiple conversations with people dating back days, there was as much interest in Josh McDaniels and Eric Bienemy and Joe Judge. Even this am.

However, Judge had been a top candidate the whole time, and considering the circumstances, this seems like a solid decision.
