VIDEO: Gio Urshela Drills 2 Painful Foul Balls of His Legs and Stays in Game in Ridiculous Display
By Adam Weinrib
As if Gio Urshela had to endear himself to New York fans any further after all he's given the Yankees in Miguel Andujar's stead this season, he tried to render himself physically unable to perform in the sixth inning of Sunday night's game, and fought through it like a madman. Watch Urshela absolutely paste his upper leg with a foul rocket, limp around, stay in the box, and then do it all again on the opposite leg two pitches later.
And yes, he got RIGHT BACK IN THE BOX...before grounding out and hobbling to first base. But the standing ovation he received in the immediate aftermath, coupled with an astoundingly moving, "Gio! Gio!" chant, made this a Yankee Stadium moment for the ages (and so very 2019).
The "Replace for 28" crew has been doing unbelievable things for the vast majority of 2019, and with long-term Edwin Encarnacion and Aaron Hicks injuries accompanying their doubleheader sweep on Saturday, the very last thing this group needs is a star third baseman pelting his own body (nor did they need Jackie Bradley Jr. bunting on him the very next inning).
Urshela has earned Monday off without a doubt, but he'll argue to play.
