VIDEO: Howie Kendrick Starts Nationals' Rally That Ends With 4 Consecutive Home Runs Against Padres
By Michael Luciano
Former Washington National Craig Stammen isn't exactly having the best day at the office. The San Diego Padres' setup man surrendered four straight home runs to the Nats in the eighth inning, turning a 1-1 tie into a 5-1 deficit. Pinch-hitter Howie Kendrick got the action started by crushing a hanging curveball from Stammen.
That homer was Kendrick's 11th of the year. Not to be outdone, Trea Turner smoked a sinker right down broadway for his fourth.
Adam Eaton, by no means a power hitter, followed Turner in the order. Even he was able to get one over the fence, again exploiting a poor Stammen sinker that stayed straight.
Last, but certainly not least, was Anthony Rendon, who at least had the decency to foul a pitch off before planting one in the stands.
For a Nationals team still mired in a long slump, this could be the shot in the arm they needed. Stammen, meanwhile, just needs to hit the showers and block out the memory of this game altogether.
