VIDEO: Hunter Renfroe Ridiculously Channels His Inner Derek Jeter on Meaningless Play in Outfield
By Parker White
On the 24-year anniversary of New York Yankees great Derek Jeter making his MLB debut, San Diego Padres outfielder Hunter Renfroe paid homage to the future Hall of Famer in a peculiar way. Check out Renfroe's jump throw from the outfield on a meaningless single off the bat of Cameron Maybin and try not to laugh.
Yup. The big man for San Diego went to his right in the outfield to cut off a ball in the gap and instead of just quickly getting it in with a normal throw to second, he picked up the ball, jumped in the air and tossed it to the cutoff man.
I know Maybin has some speed, but he wasn't really busting it out of the box to go for two. As you can see, the camera cut to first base and Maybin was nowhere to be found rounding the bag.
If the jump throw led to an out for Renfroe, hats off. But this seemed unnecessary on every level. San Diego has to be happy he didn't sprain his ankle or pull a hamstring.
