VIDEO: Jarred Kelenic Homers Right After Promotion and Makes Mets Fans Nauseous
By Ryan Flores
Mets fans, avert your eyes. Jarred Kelenic completely ripped a homer in his first game at High-A Modesto, flashing his incredibly high ceiling.
Just a few months after the Mets selected Kelenic with the sixth pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, he was traded along with a plethora of other players to the Seattle Mariners for Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz. Because of that trade, Kelenic likely has a chip on his shoulder, and is out to prove to the Mets that they made the wrong move.
Kelenic came into last year's draft ranked as one of the best prep bats available, and for all the right reasons. He's a potential five-tool player thanks to his elite hitting tool, good speed, a strong arm and solid defense. He's not a power bat yet, but he's one of those players that is mature beyond his years and has an incredible work ethic, which means he could very well develop that side of his game quickly and keep ascending. Sometimes, it's hard to remember that he's only 19 years old with the impressive baseball makeup he has.
Kelenic has been tearing it up in the minors this season, hitting .302 with 11 homers, 28 runs batted in and seven 7 bags. Increasing numbers of Mets fans will be fretting over trading Kelenic as Cano keeps looking lackluster.
Right now, it looks like the Mariners clearly got the best piece in the trade, as they obtained an elite prospect who will produce for the team for a long time once he's ready, which could be within the next two to three years.
I'm sorry, Mets fans. Maybe you can find another elite prospect in this year's draft.
