VIDEO: Jimmy Nelson Records 1st Strikeout Since 2017 in Return to Mound Against Marlins

Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Jimmy Nelson has had a long journey in his road to recovery. Back on September 8 of 2017 Nelson blew out his right shoulder while sliding back into first base. Now, Nelson is back in action and has already gotten his first major league strikeout in nearly two full years.

Nelson struck out Marlins first baseman Garrett Cooper on a 85 mph knuckle curveball in the top of the first inning. The 30 year-old's original plan was to return to the Brewers lineup in time for opening day, but the injury kept him sidelined until now.

Nelson's return to pitching has been a long-time wish of Brewers fans. He's a fan favorite in Milwaukee, and is regarded as one of the top competitors in the Brewers organization and the MLB as a whole.

Nelson was having a record season at the time of his injury. Through 29 starts, the starter was 12-6 with a 3.49 ERA before his career was put on hold. He seems to be at full health now, but will have to cautious pitching with his injured shoulder.

With the Brewers tied for first in the NL Central, Jimmy Nelson will be a welcomed addition to the lineup. Nelson could likely see more time in the near future, with the Brewers playing a three-game series against the division rival Pittsburgh Pirates over the weekend and a meeting with the Houston Astros next week.

While the outing was far from clean, it was encouraging to see Nelson back on a big league mound. He's shaking off the rust now, but he should be back to form before long.
