VIDEO: Joe Girardi Pleads the Fifth When Asked About Mets Manager Job During Rays-Astros

Now that the New York Mets have a managerial opening in the wake of showing Mickey Callaway the door, the top name in the rumor mill to fill the void has been former New York Yankees skipper Joe Girardi, currently working as an analyst for MLB Network and FOX. During last night's ALDS game between the Tampa Bay Rays and Houston Astros, Girardi certainly sounded like he had more than a casual interest in the Mets job.

Girardi, as much as Yankee fans don't want to admit this, was a hell of a manager for the better part of a decade in the Bronx. Girardi's teams won a World Series, made the playoffs six times, and won at least 84 games every year.

The Mets will need to go after Girardi hard if they want to secure his services, as the Chicago Cubs are also planning to interview the former Cubs catcher for their managerial opening.

While some comparisons to former Yankee star and failed Mets manager Willie Randolph will inevitably be made, Girardi is one of the most proven, experienced choices on the market, and could be just what the Mets need to provide stability in that mess of an organization.
