VIDEO: Luis Castillo's 3-Pitch Sequence to Francisco Mejia Should Be Illegal in All States
By Sean Facey
Luis Castillo has emerged as one of the best starting pitchers in baseball in 2019. The Cincinnati Reds ace has made batters look foolish all year thanks to a deadly arsenal of pitches headlined by his killer changeup and filthy slider. But on Wednesday, he made quick work of San Diego Padres catcher Francisco Mejia on a three-pitch sequence so lethal that it should be outlawed.
He caught Mejia off guard with a blazing 97 mph fastball to start the at-bat and then made him corkscrew into the dirt not once, but twice, with two brutal off-speed pitches to finish him off.
Mejia simply got beaten by a truly outrageous and dazzling sequence from Castillo. The good news for Mejia is that the only way to go is up after hitting rock bottom.
