VIDEO: Michigan State Embarrassingly Loses After Having Too Many Players on Field for Game-Tying FG
By Karl Rasmussen
Michigan State's kicker Matt Coghlin knocked in a game-tying field goal against Arizona State with just a few seconds left on the clock, forcing overtime in the low-scoring affair. Or, at least, that's what virtually everyone thought had happened. Except for the referees, who happened to notice one tragic mistake from the Spartans' special teams unit: they had one too many players on the field. The result? Michigan State was penalized, and Coghlin was now forced to try again, this time from 47 yards out. It didn't go quite as well on try No. 2.
That might be the most painful way to lose a ballgame. Coghlin had gotten the job done, but thanks to some carelessness from the team, it was all for naught.
He shanked the next attempt, as the Sun Devil players ran off in celebration (and disbelief) over what had just happened. On the road! Mercy.
