By Daniel Marcillo
Over the last few years, baseball insiders have raved about the defensive potential of Seattle Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford, ever since he was a Phillies top prospect. Thanks to this marvelous play Friday night against the Detroit Tigers, Crawford proved he can live up to the hype by making an Ozzie Smith caliber play.
In the words of late Mariners broadcaster Dave Niehaus, Crawford pulled "something straight out of Star Wars" to make that play. This magnificent play has to qualify as a play of the year candidate.
Everything about the play is smooth, quick and efficient. From the dive to the quick transfer and the jump throw, it truly was a masterpiece.
And the replays only enhance the mastery.
One of the more interesting parts of this play is how quickly Crawford is able to get rid of of the ball. It only took about 1.25 seconds for him to gather the ball at fire a strike to first base.
It's a perfect throw, with all the elements of the play against him. He threw the ball off of one leg and without ever getting both eyes on his target. This was undoubtedly one of the most athletic plays made my a shortstop this year.
