VIDEO: Nationals Surge With Monster First Inning to Take Huge Early Lead in NLCS Game 4
By Scott Rogust
The Washington Nationals entered Tuesday night one win away from making their first World Series in franchise history. The only thing standing in their way were the depleted St. Louis Cardinals, and, well...they kicked down the door early. With men on second and third in the first inning, Anthony Rendon hit a sacrifice fly to dead center field, allowing Trea Turner to score.
The next batter, Juan Soto, added to the rally by lacing a double to left field, allowing Adam Eaton to reach home safely, giving Washington a 2-0 lead.
With only one out on the board, the Nationals continued their onslaught of starter Dakota Hudson. Victor Robles "singled" a poorly-fielded fly ball to right field, allowing Juan Soto to score. Catcher Yan Gomes then laced a single to left field, allowing both Howie Kendrick and Ryan Zimmerman to head home to extend their lead to 5-0.
Hudson departed and Adam Wainwright entered, but even he couldn't stop the bleeding, as Turner hit yet another single to left field, scoring Robles and Gomes to give them a 7-0 LEAD IN THE FIRST INNING.
The Cardinals dished this sort of pain out to the Atlanta Braves in Game 5 of the NLDS. Now, they experienced that exact traumatic event on Wednesday night.
