The New York Yankees hired innovative youngster Matt Blake as pitching coach, and then went out and signed Gerrit Cole to a record deal to help the man show off his skills. Blake was recently interviewed on YES Network and discussed how he is excited to work with Cole and form a strong partnership, which should be music to New York's ears.
Blake sounds confident in his own abilities as a coach and discusses the privilege of working with someone like Cole. He did not sound intimidated at all, and that is great news for Yankees fans.
This is Blake's first job as a pitching coach in MLB after several years working for the Cleveland Indians in different levels of the organization. The job and the opportunity to work with Cole with prove his worth as a coach, because if things go off the rails, Cole won't be the one to lose his job.
Blake will have to work with plenty of big personalities, and Cole is only one of his prominent responsibilities. Finding out new and innovative ways to work with the pitching staff could finally get the Yankees a World Series title after a decade-long drought.
