VIDEO: No. 5 Oklahoma's Playoff Hopes Die in Loss to Kansas State After Controversial Onside Kick
By Sam Dunn
Another week, another huge college football upset! This time, the No. 5 Oklahoma Sooners will be the ones picking up the pieces and wondering how they let things get so out of hand after surrendering a 48-41 result on the road to unranked Kansas State. And they almost had this one, too. It came down to a controversial onside kick inside of two minutes to go.
Well, it sure looked like Sooners ball, but a video review revealed that the ball struck the knee of an OU player before it had gone the minimum 10 yards required for it to be a recoverable onside kick. And with that, the Wildcats simply had to run out the clock.
So, how did they do it? How did these unsung boys from the Little Apple outlast the mighty Sooners? You need only remember two words: Skylar Thompson.
The Wildcat QB rattled off four rushing touchdowns on the day, adding 213 yards through the air on 28 attempts. His 14-yard scamper to put KSU ahead at the end of the first half was a true turning point. Not only was it his team's longest touchdown of the game, but it gave the home team a lead they'd never relinquish.
395 yards passing and 96 rushing from Jalen Hurts was all to no avail. The Sooners just couldn't get it done defensively on the day, and the College Football Playoff race has been turned on its head as a result.
