VIDEO: Pete Alonso's Game-Winning Swing and Bat Flip in Home Run Derby is Moment of Mets' Season
By Jerry Trotta
Just imagine how much more miserable the New York Mets 2019 campaign would be if not for Pete Alonso. Outside of him, Jeff McNeil, and brief moments of brilliance from Jacob deGrom, Mickey Callaway's club has had virtually nothing to be excited about throughout the first three months of the season. Well, in typical Polar Bear fashion, the rookie slugger was at it again during Monday's Home Run Derby and treated Metropolitan fans to the undisputed moment of the year with his epic walk-off swing and bat flip to take down Vladimir Guerrero Jr. It's just as breathtaking the morning after.
Genuine euphoria from the 24-year-old All-Star.
On top of it all, Alonso also stated in his subsequent interview that he will give 10% of his $1 million prize money to charities that he holds dear to his heart: 5% to the Wounded Warrior Project and 5% to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
"I've been living a fantasy," said Alonso. "And I just want to use my platform [to] almost kind of just reach out to people and just make people aware of these causes. And I hope that other people could find the kindness in their hearts."
Honestly, is there a better guy that the Metsies could ultimately turn to as the face of their winning-deprived organization?
At this rate, we'd be hard-pressed to name somebody else more deserving
Enjoy this one, Queens.
