VIDEO: Pete Alonso's MLB-Leading 45th Home Run Was a Majestic Blast to Extend Mets' Lead Over Nats
By Michael Luciano
In a year where not much has gone right for the New York Mets and bullpen meltdowns are now a daily occurrence, Mets fans can always look to slugging rookie first baseman Pete Alonso as a beacon of hope. Alonso, who was tied with Mike Trout and Cody Bellinger for the MLB lead in home runs with 44, just broke that tie when he launched home run No. 45 deep into the Nationals Park bleachers.
Alonso's home run off of Washington starter Anibal Sanchez gave the Mets a 4-1 lead.
Alonso, who already has the Mets record for home runs in a season, can now set his sights on the MLB rookie record, which is currently held by Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge, who hit 52 in 2017.
Alonso may have given the Mets a three-run lead, but as we all should know by now, no lead is safe with that bullpen.
