VIDEO: Philadelphia Union Star Alejandro Bedoya Shouts Strong Gun Control Message Into Field Mic
By Scott Rogust
The United States was struck by unspeakable violence this weekend. 20 people were killed by a shooter in an El Paso, Texas shopping center on Saturday. Less than 24 hours later, nine people at a Dayton, Ohio bar were shot to death by a masked gunman. With "thoughts and prayers" swiftly losing meaning due to the frequency of these tragedies in our nation, Philadelphia Union star Alejandro Bedoya used his platform to raise awareness to the government. During Sunday's game against D.C. United, Bedoya scored a second-minute goal to put the Union on the board. However, it's his words that were picked up by a hot mic at Audi Field that speak louder than a goal ever could.
"Congress, do something now. End gun violence," Bedoya pleaded while standing in the nation's capital.
Bedoya has been vocal about the problems with gun violence in the country. The soccer star grew up in Weston, Fla., approximately 15 minutes away from Parkland, where 17 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students were killed in a 2018 mass shooting. Bedoya paid tribute to the victims shortly after the tragedy by wearing an "MSD Strong" shirt.
Prior to Sunday's game, Bedoya tweeted out what he believes should be done to prevent the mass shootings that have sadly become the norm in the United States.
Alejandro Bedoya, like many others, wants something to be done in order to end gun violence in the United States once and for all. This was an incredible gesture.
