VIDEO: Recapping the Braves' Electric First Half to the 2019 MLB Season
By Parker White
The Atlanta Braves head into the All-Star break with 54 wins and are currently in first place in NL East. They got off to a rocky start and hovered around .500 after the first couple months, but they've really caught fire and surged to the top of the division.
With the way they are playing and the karma surrounding this team, you can expect plenty more exciting moments in the second half of the season, but let's take a look at some of the more electric occurrences from the first half of the 2019 season.
One of the first moments that made you believe in this team came on April 28 against the Colorado Rockies. Atlanta was down two in the bottom of the eighth inning, but Josh Donaldson made his presence felt with a go-ahead three-run homer, leading to an 8-7 victory at home.
Even with that victory, the Braves continued to be an up-and-down club. But that all changed on May 10 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, as they lost the previous four games that included a sweep against the Dodgers.
Manager Brian Snitker decided to shake up the lineup and moved Ronald Acuña Jr. to the leadoff spot, Dansby Swanson hitting second behind him, and Josh Donaldson moving to cleanup behind Freddie Freeman. Oh, and in the first game with the change to the batting order, Acuña went yard with a go-ahead solo shot in the eighth.
This Braves team went to another level less than a week later, as they called up one of their top prospects Austin Riley to step in for the injured Ender Inciarte. He made a great first impression and homered in his debut against the St. Louis Cardinals.
You can't recap the first half for the Braves without Freddie Freeman, who has once again inserted himself into the MVP conversation. There was no greater moment for Freeman than hitting a walk-off homer in the 10th inning off Milwaukee's Josh Hader.
Can Christian Yelich and Cody Bellinger do that?
This is arguably one of the best moments of the Braves season. At one point, Atlanta was down 7-2 to their division rival Philadelphia Phillies, but Atlanta didn't blink and their offense continued to rally late in games. The Braves scored eight runs in the final four innings, including a walk-off two-run single off the bat of Brian McCann.
The Braves have had plenty of electrifying moments, but they ended the first half in style with Dallas Keuchel pitching into the eighth inning, as well as utility man Charlie Culberson coming in as a defensive replacement and saving the game with a clutch catch and throw at home plate with the bases loaded and no outs.
Maybe it's a little recency bias, but you can't get any better with that play from Culberson.
Get ready for a wild second half!
