VIDEO: Reds Make MLB Offensive History With Wild Outburst at Coors Field
By Michael Luciano
The Cincinnati Reds might be the most unlucky team in baseball. They are in last place in the NL Central despite a decent 42-47 record, two All-Star pitchers, and an incredibly deep lineup. On any given night, the Reds can explode offensively. Against the wayward Kyle Freeland and the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, Cincinnati did just that, becoming the first team in MLB history to record five triples and three home runs in the same game.
While Coors Field is a launching pad that can turn Curt Casili into Johnny Bench, they've accounted for the altitude by pushing the fences back. This created the most expansive outfield in all of baseball, where triples and even inside the park home runs have become commonplace.
While this is an incredible achievement by David Bell and his Reds, let's not let Charlie Blackmon and the Rockies outfield off the hook. If Blackmon played right field like that in a Little League game, people would be upset.
Coors Field is a harsh mistress. It can make any Rockies player a solid hitter, but will also lead to your pitchers getting beaten up to an historic degree on any given night.
