VIDEO: Refs Make Terrible Call on Browns for Unnecessary Use of Helmet Against Colts
By Mark Powell
It's preseason for the officials, too. Yet, this isn't a good sign for fans hoping that the new standards for refs will increase, especially after a terrible pass interference no-call led to the Saints wrongfully being eliminated from playoff contention. Yet, in the Browns second preseason game against the Colts, we have another example of why you can never trust NFL officiating.
JT Hassell, a safety out of Florida State, was called for unnecessary use of the helmet on this special teams tackle. While some could argue he was leading with his head, the impact of the hit was to the chest/shoulder region, meaning there was really no danger in his technique.
It's the preseason, so the results don't matter, but if the NFL is going to start calling perfectly legal tackles as unnecessary roughness then we're in for a long year.
