VIDEO: Refs Missed Da'Ron Payne's Obvious Helmet to Helmet Hit Against Carson Wentz in Week 1
By Jerry Trotta
Color us not surprised at all, but we have come across yet another instance in which NFL referees failed to flag a blatant personal foul penalty. During Sunday's NFC East showdown between the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins, defensive tackle Da'Ron Payne walked away scot-free after a clear-as-day helmet-to-helmet hit on quarterback Carson Wentz.
Not only was the hit a no-doubt 15-yard penalty -- it couldn't be more palpable that Payne extended his neck to launch himself into the helmet of the North Dakota State product -- but Payne also rung Wentz's bell well after he released the football. The second-year man out of Alabama could have easily glided past the Pro Bowl gunslinger without lowering the boom and lighting him up.
Of course, the Eagles ended up prevailing in this one either way, with Wentz tossing 321 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Don't be surprised if the league's front office reviews this play and ultimately ends up fining the Redskins pass rusher.
