VIDEO: Ridiculous Play in Cubs-Cardinals Results in Anthony Rizzo Getting Thrown Out at Home
By Ryan Flores
Oh, Anthony Rizzo. During Friday's game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs, there was a bit of a mix-up during Kris Bryant's at-bat in the fifth inning that resulted in Rizzo getting thrown out at the plate after initially hustling to get to third base.
The ball hit a security guard and Rizzo seemingly slowed down because of it, but wound up attempting to run full speed again to get to the plate before being thrown out by Marcell Ozuna. There was clearly confusion on Rizzo's part, as he didn't know whether the ball would be declared dead in that situation.
For those interested in what the ruling is on a play like that, since the security guard attempted to get out of the way of the ball, it was unintentional interference, which means that it was a live ball, and still very much in play. That means that Rizzo should've never stopped hustling all the way to home plate.
Still, Rizzo should've been busting it the whole way instead of wondering what the ruling was. Worst-case scenario, the ump would've sent him back to third if it was a dead ball.
