VIDEO: Stephen A. Smith Posts Dramatic and Hopeful Reaction to Knicks Drafting RJ Barrett
By Adam Weinrib
Stephen A. Smith was every Knicks fan on Draft Night. They geared themselves up for Zion Williamson, against the odds, believing a 14% chance was a guarantee. Then, when they were sunk in that pursuit, the fan base uniformly realized that, actually, they were quite lucky to have hopped into the top three in a draft where every pick thereafter was a pressure cooker. RJ Barrett's the city's guy now, and SAS launched into an impassioned and excited rant when he realized that the Knicks hadn't bungled this one by going off the board.
While Barrett's efficiency could use a boost and it's unclear just how well his long-range shot translates, the kid has star power, was the consensus top pick before the season started, and (most importantly) wasn't a reach, a mess, or a bizarre trade down.
With Darius Garland (already injured) and Coby White (exciting, but questionable) being brought in for last-minute workouts, plenty of Knicks folks convinced themselves the team would botch the pick spectacularly, as they so often do.
Instead, they went with the consensus. And that's reason enough to celebrate "Our" J.
