VIDEO: Tommy Edman Rocks Grand Slam to Take Lead for Cardinals After Paul DeJong Homer
By Scott Rogust
The Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals kicked off their four-game series on Thursday night. Entering the top of the fifth inning, the Reds held what looked to be a pretty cozy 3-0 lead over their NL Central rivals. That all changed once Paul DeJong took a Tanner Roark pitch deep to left field on a two-run homer to bring the Cardinals within one run.
St. Louis wasn't done there. After tying things up at 3-3 (thanks to a DeJong RBI single), the Cardinals found themselves with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning. Rookie Tommy Edman cleared the bases with St. Louis' first grand slam of the season.
The NL Central is a tightly-contested division, as the last-place Reds are just 7.5 games behind first. Interdivisional series like this one will be crucial in determining a winner.
Despite the Reds taking an early command of the game, Paul DeJong and Tommy Edman brought them back down to earth with their respective homers.
